You'll always be one of my favorite people. You are one of a kind. I'm not just saying that. You are a wonderful mix of kindness and intimidation. A social justice warrior way before that phrase came into vogue. Whether you're standing up for the rights of the dispossessed or questioning the policies of the miniature golf police in Maine, it's always about what's right - because right matters.

And, yes, while you may, in real life, be a pussy cat, you can also be a little intimidating. You have that side-eyed glance that always makes me pause. You're thinking. You're evaluating. I wonder, is she going to let me have it, or is she going to be okay with what I just said? I feel a slight quaking in my shoes. A drop of sweat races down the back of my neck. Then slowly - almost too slowly - the smile finally appears followed by a bright twinkle in your eyes. Whew!

But all that aside, it is your kindness, your genuine interest in people, and your sense of humor that touches me most of all. You make me laugh and think, and I always always look forward to seeing you when you come out. You are good company, Vanessa, damn good company!
